Shadow Work Self-Assessment

Shadow Work Self-Assessment

This interactive tool helps you explore your relationship with shadow — the disowned, denied, or projected aspects of yourself that operate outside conscious awareness. Shadow is not a defect; it is inherent to human psychology. The capacity to recognize it is itself a developmental achievement.

The assessment has three sections:

  • Section A (Shadow Mechanisms): 10 scenario-based questions exploring how five core shadow mechanisms — projection, repression, splitting, reaction formation, and introjection — may operate in your experience.
  • Section B (Developmental Line Shadow): 8 questions identifying which developmental lines (emotional, interpersonal, cognitive, moral, spiritual, self, somatic, shadow awareness) carry the strongest shadow charge.
  • Section C (Spiritual Bypassing): 12 items adapted from the spiritual bypassing inventory, exploring how spiritual practice may be used to avoid rather than integrate difficult material.

You will receive a descriptive profile, personalized module recommendations, and — if your responses suggest material that may benefit from facilitated support — a recommendation to consider working with a therapist or shadow work facilitator. No data is stored or transmitted.

Before You Begin

Shadow work involves encountering disowned parts of yourself. This tool is a map for self-reflection, not a clinical assessment. If anything activated feels overwhelming, please stop and seek support.
