Compound subjunctive for counterfactual review
Using the conditional and compound subjunctive when reviewing what might have been, e.g. 'se a obra tivesse ousado', 'teria conquistado'
- Se a segunda parte tivesse mantido o ritmo, o filme teria sido memorável.
- Caso o elenco tivesse envelhecido melhor, o resultado seria outro.

The review genre in European Portuguese values measured judgement and speculative counterfactuals; critics say what the work did not do as much as what it did. This demands a rich command of the conditional and the subjunctive.
