Elaborate narration

Vocabulary

Grammar

Fronting for spoken emphasis

Fronting the object or complement and using emphatic structures such as 'nor did they' and 'so began the story' to guide narrative climax in speech

  • Never has there been such enthusiasm at a conference.
  • At last, the long-awaited days arrived.

Cultural notes

British speakers mark narrative peaks with fronting and intonational emphasis, often understatement. Elaborate storytelling tends to be compressed; the evaluation of events is carried more by tone and phrase than by expressive verbs.
