Use 'consigo' and 'não consigo' for ability

Vocabulary

  I can swim well.
  Ich kann gut schwimmen.

• I can't... — Ich kann nicht...

  I can't sing.
  Ich kann nicht singen.

• I understand — Ich verstehe

  I understand German, but I don't speak well.
  Ich verstehe Deutsch, aber ich spreche nicht gut.

• I know — Ich weiß

  I don't know.
  Ich weiß es nicht.

• to be able to — können

  Can you help me?
  Kannst du mir helfen?

• to not be able to — nicht können

  I can't come today.
  Ich kann heute nicht kommen.

Cultural notes

The modal verb "können" is one of the most used in German; it expresses both ability ("I can swim") and possibility ("Can you help me?").
